Today, walking along the path, I suddenly saw a swift floundering helplessly on the ground. Swifts cannot walk on the ground. They can’t take off from the ground. Swifts live in nests located at a height, and begin their flight, rushing down from them, and at the end of the flight they return to the nest. I knew all this very well, having lived side by side with them for many years. Several times they flew into our balcony and just as helplessly floundered. All you have to do is throw them out the window. In free fall they are easy spread their wings and continue their flight.
Therefore, when I saw a fluttering bird on the ground, I knew what to do. I carefully picked it up, looked around: on the one hand – trees, on the other hand, a space free from trees and a road at some distance. I threw the bird high in the opposite away from the trees … but she did not fly. Perhaps she had a damaged wing or something else. Trying to fly she worked wings, but gradually descended and sank onto the road, where she was immediately hit by a car.
Forgive me, swift. I didn’t think of it. I didn’t take into account that something could go wrong and you wouldn’t fly. I should have gone the extra 50 meters and throw you in the direction of the lawn, where you could land safely. I don’t know what would happen next, but you would have a second chance, which I deprived you of.
Many years ago I saw an advertisement in a newspaper that stated: “The best way to reach one’s goals is to look ahead”. Very true to me. It is worth thinking further ahead, predict risks and look for ways to reduce them, the more carefully the higher stakes, especially when someone’s life can be in danger.
