The song “Shir LaShalom” was written in Israel by poet Ya’akov Rotblit and set to music by composer Yair Rosenblum. It was first performed by the Nahal army band in 1969 during the War of Attrition between Israel and Egypt. The lyrics are spoken from the perspective of a fallen soldier and call for peace.
On November 4, 1995, Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli Prime Minister, sang the song with Shimon Peres, singer Mirri Alloni, and other performers at a peace rally in Tel Aviv. He was assassinated after the rally by a right-wing extremist, and the lyrics, stained with his blood, were found in his pocket.
The song has become the anthem of the Israeli peace movement.
