The poem “Buchenwald alarm”, which later became a famous song, was written by the Soviet poet, front-line soldier Isaak Sobol (pseudonym Alexander Sobolev) in 1958. The reason was the opening of a memorial complex on the site of one of the largest Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald in Thuringia (East Germany). In Buchenwald, more than 56,000 prisoners were killed and died.
Composer Vano Muradeli wrote music for poetry. The song was first performed at the International Amateur Festival in Vienna (Austria) in the late 1950s and was a great success.
The most famous song performance is by Soviet, Azerbaijani and Russian pop and opera singer Muslim Magomayev. He sang it for the first time in 1963.
The song pays tribute to the memory of the dead and serves as a command to the living to protect the world and preserve peace.
